Principals Report
Welcome to the last term of the year,
I cannot believe we are already here! However, the positive aspect is that it is a term packed out with learning and one for us all to enjoy.
Over the year, some of our students have regularly been visiting Montrose Bay High and have come back very enthusiastic about the science or other activities they have participated in. We are looking forward to our Grade 6’s feedback and enjoyment when they visit for the Arts Program ‘Dragonfly’. The music, art and drama are always at a high standard at Montrose Bay High.
On Friday, we have our Professional Learning Day for the teaching staff, consequently it is a student free day. We have two focuses for the day, the first part of the day will be our Literacy Coaches, Mrs Deb Button, Mrs Jane Bayley, and Ms Lauren Payne updating and developing our professional knowledge on the teaching of vocabulary.
The science of reading vocabulary is the knowledge of words, their meanings and how to use them correctly. It is one part of language comprehension that helps readers understand texts. It is the building block in the bridge between foundational skills and comprehension. Such a critical area and one I am looking forward to knowing more about.
The second part of the day sees our Maths Coaches giving staff time to review the Australian Curriculum Maps on Maths. These Maps are an excellent planning guide to ensure that the Maths curriculum is covered throughout the year to build student knowledge and understanding.
These professional learning days are a tremendous opportunity for the teaching staff to continue developing excellence in teaching and learning. It is also a privilege to have the opportunity to learn from the excellence of staff colleagues.
Kind regards
Deirdre

Safeguarding News
TELL SOMEONE
All children in Tasmania have a right to be known, safe, well and learning. We are highly committed to the safety of all students at our school.
Earlier this month, DECYP launched the Tell Someone initiative, to raise awareness in the community about child sexual abuse and grooming.
The Tell Someone website gives children and young people clear advice on what to do in situations where they feel worried, unsafe or unsure. It also gives adults advice and support on how to respond if they suspect or know a child is being groomed or sexually abused or is at risk of harm.
Please visit the website, read the information, and try to find a suitable time to talk with your children about this issue and the resources available. It’s important that you both understand the possible signs of sexual abuse or grooming behaviour, and how to stay safe online and offline.
If reading this information has caused you distress, please visit DECYP’s website for a list of support services.
Please contact the school if you have any questions about this information.

Cyber Safety Month
As Cyber Safety Month ends it is great time to remind families of the need be vigilant in supporting their children online and maintaining their personal safety.
44% of Australian young people report having a negative online experience in the last 6 months, this includes 15% who received threats or abuse online.
Check the following websites to find out the latest information regarding online safety and latest trends. There is also information available about how to deal with unwanted and inappropriate contacts.
The theme for 2023 is “Be cyber wise – don’t compromise. There are four simple steps you can take to be cyber wise and significantly boost your cyber security:
- Update your devices regularly.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication.
- Back up your important files.
- Use passphrases and password managers.
Cybercrime reports are increasing, but by taking these simple steps everyone can take part to make Australia the most secure place to connect online. Between 2021-2022, one cybercrime was reported to authorities every seven minutes. Be cyber wise and avoid the compromise of your devices and accounts.

Children’s University
This is one of the most popular activities for student engagement at Rosetta Primary. This year there are 47 participants who are regularly volunteering in the community, learning new skills, and developing personal interests.
The program recognises learning opportunities outside of school hours using a passport approach to collect anywhere from 1 hour to a thousand hours of learning. The hours then provide details that convert to a range of levels of achievement recognised by the university at their annual awards ceremony.
Students at Rosetta Primary have been involved in Children’s University for eight years and some of our past student graduates from the program are now enrolled in university or pursuing their interests in learning and creating opportunities to purse a range of employment options.
Children’s University also involves families, and we have many students who participate with other family members.
Students have already completed their passports for 2023 and have begun the final preparation for this year’s Graduation Ceremony at The University of Tasmania on Tuesday 14 November.

Hobart City Mission

It is that time of the year again when Rosetta Primary support the work of Hobart City Mission to run a food or toy drive to support others to have a Happy Christmas. We are informed that over the past five years, the number of people needing Christmas assistance has tripled. At Rosetta Primary we like to think of others and support our community so please donate to our containers available in the Front Office Area.
We will be hosting a food drive or if you choose to add a toy to our collection then that would be appreciated as well. All donations will go towards supporting others and put a little bit of joy back into Christmas for hundreds of families in Southern Tasmania.
Suggestions before adding your donation:
- Non-perishable food items only.
- Please check the expiry dates of items before adding to the container in the front foyer.
- No damaged packaging or broken items.
Containers will be available for making donations until Thursday 7 December when Hobart City Mission will be collecting items ready for distribution.

E Team

With the warmer weather, the E Team members have been busy in the garden, of course the weeds are growing faster than the plants!!
At present we have the following growing: potatoes, peas, broad beans, lettuces, strawberries, parsley, rhubarb, tomatoes, nasturtiums, polyanthus and cinnnerarias!!
We looked at ways to reduce weeds and that is our fun fact this week.
Mulch is one of the best tools to help prevent weed invasion. Chunky mulch with no or few fine particles works best. The chunky pieces last a long time, and the air gaps between the chunky pieces make it very hard for weeds seeds to grow. For vegie gardens, straw mulch works well, but needs redoing regularly.
Mulching will be our next job!
