Principal’s Report
Smiling Minds at Rosetta PS
Mental health and wellbeing is important as it underpins the way children feel about themselves, how they think, learn, and relate to others. At Rosetta Primary School we develop mental health and wellbeing through the use of the Smiling Mind resource. This resource promotes mindfulness:
- Mindfulness strengthens the minds' ability to focus, pay attention and reduce worry — the more we practise, the stronger the mind becomes.
- Mindfulness provides important skills to help young people engage and participate in learning in two ways:
- It can reduce emotional distress, settle and calm students and reduce behavioural challenges.
- It enhances and strengthens the areas of the brain that are involved in learning, thinking and memory.
Smiling Mind is backed up by both evidence and research. The program was reviewed in 2016, in one of the largest research programs worldwide. The conclusions indicated that Smiling Mind can assist students with sleep, wellbeing, managing emotions, concentration, and classroom behaviour.
If you would like more information, have a talk with your child’s class teacher or Mrs Lenthall , Mr Johnstone or myself and we will happily give you some links and resources. Here’s a link to the website if you are interested in knowing more:

AdAstra Update
Recently some students who are involved in our AdAstra program excitedly accepted the challenge to build marshmallow blasters, which proved to be a challenging but fun example of learning through doing.
By working through the designing, building, testing cycle several times and talking about improvements—the blasters improved. The students learned that it’s okay if something doesn’t work perfectly the first time because trying again and making improvements is part of the process.
We are looking forward to our next session where we will be competing to see which design will launch a marshmallow the furthest and then which one is the most accurate at hitting a target.

Excursions
Prep, 1 & 2 Excursion to TSO Words and Music
How do you describe colours if you can’t see? The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra is performing new music by Tasmanian composers inspired by Menena Cotton’s award-winning book for blind and sighted readers, “The Black Book of Colours”.
On Tuesday 18 June, students in Prep, P-1, 1, 2A & 2B will be travelling to the 9B Studios in New Norfolk to hear the performance by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Students will leave school at 9:15am and will return by 11:30am. Students will need to be in school uniform.

5-6A Excursion to Government House
Dear Parents and Guardians
On Wednesday 12 June, 5-6A will be attending Government House for an excursion to deepen our understanding about Australia’s political structure.
Students will be touring the grounds and house, harvesting and planting vegetables, as well as cooking with fresh produce from the garden. There may also be an opportunity to meet with the Governor.
We will be leaving school at 9:40am and returning by 2:00pm.
As morning tea and lunch are provided, students will not be required to bring their own food for the day. Students will need to be in school uniform on this day.
Thank you.

Parent Teacher Conversations
Bookings for Parent/Teacher conversation appointments for 2024 will open on Wednesday 5 June.
We would like to continue our goal of meeting with every parent during the Parent/Teacher week. It is an important time to celebrate your child’s achievements so far this year and to hear about areas for improving. It is also a time for you to share important information and to ask questions on areas of learning which you might have. We are using Session Keeper which is part of the Schoolzine package. You will be able to click on the Book Your Appointment Now button and you will see all the class teacher names so you can book your times. You can book an appointment on any device. If you have any questions about our appointment system with Session Keeper please call the school office on 6208 1200.
Exciting News
Rosetta Primary have received a grant from Keep Australia Beautiful to establish a Bush Tucker Garden in addition to our veggie garden area. We will be developing the area next to Unit D, Mrs Bayley’s room. Students are drawing their plans for the area and have had some wonderful discussions about what should be included and how it should look.
We are very excited and can’t wait to get started.
Some of the plants which are indigenous to Tasmania and which we may use in our garden are….
- Dorrigo pepper: a spicy leaf that can be used as a seasoning
- Candlenut: a nut that can be roasted and eaten or used as a candle
- Cut leaf mint bush: a minty herb that can be used for tea or flavouring
- Riberry: a red berry that can be eaten fresh or made into jams or sauces
- Lemon myrtle: a lemon-scented leaf that can be used for tea, flavouring, or perfume
