Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

Today was the first day of the NAPLAN assessments for Grade 3 and 5 students across Australia. They are given four assessments: Writing, Reading, Language Conventions and Maths. As I visited each class there was a silent focus in each of the areas as the students began their writing assessment. Good luck to them all.

At our last assembly, we welcomed the highly esteemed illustrator/ writer Coral Tulloch to our school. She will be working with our school for 6 wonderful weeks. Staff and students have been talking with her on what they would like to do and listening to her suggestions and developing plans. An exciting 6 weeks will follow.

Lifting Literacy

Rosetta PS has been on a journey to improve our student’s reading and spelling based on sound research and evidence for some time now.

Our teaching is very much in line with the department’s Lifting Literacy priority. Behind it is the premise that learning to read sets you up for life. It is foundational to everything we do – learning, working, functioning in society.

We want every young Tasmanian to have the reading skills they need when they leave our schools.

This year, all Tasmanian Government schools are taking steps to introduce the evidence based way of teaching reading. This follows the latest national and international research about how our brains learn to read.

What does the research say?

Children aren’t born with natural skills in reading, like they are for walking and talking. They must develop new pathways in their brain to master this skill. It is a complex process.

Current research shows that reading can be broken down into a series of skills. This starts with phonics –the relationship between letters and sounds. In upper primary, secondary and college, the focus shifts to reading comprehension.

At every stage it’s important that students master all the individual skills before moving on. This is the best way to set them up for success.

From 2024 all Tasmanian teachers will be undergoing training in how to teach reading based on the latest evidence.

Importantly, all staff from Kindergarten to Year 12 will be doing the same training. This means that by 2026, no matter where your child goes to school, they will be taught to become confident readers in the same way.

You can read more about Tasmania’s new approach to reading on the DECYP website.

Kind regards
Deirdre

Congratulations to our first Maths Competition Prize winners for this Year – Phoebe and Mary.

E Team

The E team students have farewelled one of our much appreciated students, Ebony, who is moving interstate. She has been a wonderful member of the E Team for several years and we wish her and her family well for their move.

This week we have continued to work in our garden beds, preparing them for new plantings.

Our fun fact for this week is a potato recipe…..we managed to grow ¾ of a bucket of potatoes!

Easy Potato Salad

  • 1 kilo potatoes, cut into 1/4
  • 1cup sour cream
  • 1/4cup mayonnaise
  • 4spring onions, green and white parts sliced
  • 1teaspoon salt
  • 1teaspoon pepper

Instructions

  1. In a large pot of boiling water, cook the potatoes for about 10 minutes until tender and can easily be pierced with a  Drain and add to a large mixing bowl while still warm.
  2. In the same large mixing bowl with the warm potatoes, add in the sour cream, mayonnaise, sliced onion,  salt and Gently toss to combine.

NAPLAN

Today our Grade 3 and 5 students sat their first NAPLAN tests…..we were very pleased with the effort and commitment of our students. Testing begins at 9:00am each day so students are reminded to arrive at school promptly so they are in a positive mind frame.

Students arriving after 9:00am will need to report to the office for instructions.

There will be further testing tomorrow and Friday and we wish all participating students good luck.
